A new standard for the furniture industry
Transforming the furniture industry one piece at a time
People everywhere are being ripped off paying for furniture that fails, cannot be repaired or reused, and pollutes the planet we all share. We’re here to change that.
We’re challenging throwaway culture with a new model for furniture design and production. We believe waste is a design flaw—it should be eliminated at the sketchpad. While circularity—the potential to repair, reuse, and recycle—must be designed in from the beginning.
The problem with disposable furniture
The furniture industry is plagued by short-lived products made from non-renewable materials, depleting our natural resources and contributing to a cycle of waste and pollution. Fitted furniture is single use, regardless of the length of its guarantee. This systemic problem means that 20 million pieces of furniture are thrown away in the UK each year, most of which goes straight to landfill.
Our cradle-to-cradle philosophy
We create furniture of enduring quality using solid timber for many years of use and reuse. When you move house, take your freestanding Somer kitchen with you. When the time comes, refurbish it or resell it with our buy-back scheme and online marketplace. When your furniture finally reaches the end of its life, we’ll help you recycle it or return it to the earth to fuel new life.
Not all timber is created equal
We’re working towards Grown in Britain certification, which means that our native timber will be responsibly sourced from woodlands managed to UK Forestry Standard.
Tech-enabled craftsmanship
Every piece emerging from our Somerset workshop benefits from the skill and experience of our carpenters. Technology helps us deliver this quality at scale. For example, our multi-tier press turns a week-long process into just three hours.
For you and the planet
Our design-led approach benefits not only our customers but also the environment. By choosing Somer, you’re investing in furniture that bring lasting value to your space and contributes to a more sustainable future.
